TRADITIONAL WARLI PAINTING ARTIST

Profile of Artist:

Dhakat Vitthal Kadu was born in a family of folk artists who practiced Warli paintings.

Warli art is a style of rural Indian tribal art that is practiced primarily by the womenfolk of the Warli tribe of Maharashtra located close to Mumbai. Initially Dhakat Vitthal Kadu learned this skill from his mother and later he has passed on to his son Mangesh and his daughter.

Dhakat Vitthal said that his paintings represent scenes from their day-to-day life such as farming, harvests and fishing, worshipping, festivals, weddings and dancing, culture, beliefs, and more.

The trademark of Warli paintings is the use of geometric designs such as triangles, circles, dots and crooked lines to depict human figures, animals, houses, crops.

In spite of Warli art being practiced for generations by the tribe, it was introduced to the world at large only in 1970’s.Now even Dhakat Vitthal is experimenting by doing warli painting on T-Shirts and other utility items.
